Troubleshooting PowerWatch-RIM communications during installation.

The PowerWatch-RIM consists of an in-home display unit (IHD) and a sensor unit (also called the "main module") that communicate wirelessly using 2.4GHz radio communication. Before installing the PowerWatch-RIM it is important to consider the best location for the Main Module which must be located next to the electrical panel. If the electrical panel is in the basement, then the main module should be located as high as possible in order to provide the best communication with the display.

Factors that affect communication range are:

  • Distance between the display in the main module
  • Objects and materials that are between the display and the main module will degrade the signal strength. These include:
    • Metallic objects such as sheet metal ducts
    • Concrete and masonry including breaks and cinderblocks. Concrete reinforced with steel such as rebar or mesh is worst of all.
    • Any conductive or partially conductive materials including some types of drywall
    • Pipes, especially metal or water filled

During installation initial setup or during firmware upgrade, locate the display with clear line of sight and within 10ft/3m of the Main Module. Ensure that communication at short range is working properly before relocating the display to the desired final location. After relocation, the display may take several minutes to reacquire the signal from the Main Module again. If communication cannot be established after relocating the IHD unit, try other alternate locations as some locations may be problematic due to the distance and materials as desribed above.

My PowerWatch-RIM continually displays "Scanning", doesn't update the power reading.

Check to make sure that the Network Address is set up properly if this is a new installation. Consult the Users Manual for setup.

If the unit was working properly before:

  1. Switch off the breakers that power the Main Module
  2. Wait 10 seconds
  3. Switch back on the breakers that power the Main Module

This should reset the Main Module and restore communication.
